Bitcoin is the talk of the world. Why? Some people are making a quick fortune for little investment. But, what is it?<\/span><\/p>\n

Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency created in 2009 as a new form of online international payment system. It only exists as a digital currency and remains unregulated. This means it does not have to meet the regulations of any country or their tax laws. Consumers choose the fees they pay on transactions, which you carry out anonymously. No one single entity or individual dictates how to use Bitcoins.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can use Bitcoin to buy goods and services the same way as you use traditional money. But, the value of Bitcoin wildly varies depending on the supply and demand for the currency. While the value of the dollar also varies, the government can always print more money when they need it. Doing this can lead to inflation. There is only a finite number of Bitcoins available. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Who created Bitcoin?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Bitcoin is the first type of cryptocurrency created. It is a new form of money that uses cryptography, instead of a central authority, to control it. Bitcoin was first created by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009 as part of an open-source project. It is a transparent system with the software openly available. Anyone can look at the code or change it to create their own cryptocurrency version.<\/span><\/p>\n

How Bitcoin works<\/span><\/h2>\n

Bitcoin operates as a computer program or mobile app that provides users with a digital wallet for dealing with Bitcoin trading. Once you have a Bitcoin wallet it will generate your Bitcoin address to send to people for payment. You should only use these addresses once as you can generate new addresses at any time. This works in a similar way to email.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bitcoin is backed by a publicly shared ledger called a \u2018blockchain\u2019. This contains every confirmed transaction between Bitcoin wallets. Transactions are transfers between Bitcoin wallets that become part of the blockchain. This gives Bitcoin wallets access to the information to calculate how much you have to spend.<\/span><\/p>\n

Every wallet has a secret key used to provide mathematical proof payment has come from its owner for every transaction. This signature stops anyone from altering the transaction once it is issued, and verifies you are spending your own Bitcoin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Advantages and disadvantages of Bitcoin<\/span><\/h2>\n

Bitcoin has more advantages than disadvantages. Advantages include:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Choose what fees to pay.<\/b> There are no fees for receiving Bitcoins and you can usually choose what fees to pay. The amount of fees can often dictate how long the transaction takes. The higher the fee, the faster you will receive confirmation of a successful Bitcoin transaction. <\/span><\/li>\n
  • Low risks for sellers.<\/b> Bitcoin transactions are not reversible, which makes them secure. They do not carry a customer\u2019s personal information with it like when you use a credit card or PayPal. This protects sellers from fraudulent charge backs and losses to scammers.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Pay anytime, anywhere.<\/b> Bitcoin is not constrained by time, space, or public holidays. You have full control of your money at all times 24\/7.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Safe and in control.<\/b> Consumers have full control of how they spend Bitcoin. Sellers cannot push through extra charges like they can through other payment methods. There is no personal information shared along with a Bitcoin transaction. This gives users a high-level of security in a time where identity theft is a risk.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As with everything, there are disadvantages too:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Relatively unknown.<\/b> Bitcoin is a new type of currency so there is still limited acceptance of its use. As people become more aware, more businesses accept Bitcoin as payment.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Wildly fluctuating values.<\/b> There is only a small amount of Bitcoin in circulation so small events can significantly affect its worth. Because this is the first start-up currency, experts believe the value will stabilise as the technology matures.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Still in development.<\/b> Bitcoin is still a software in development with incomplete features.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Why is everyone talking about Bitcoin?<\/span><\/h2>\n

      Bitcoin is a piece of tradeable computer code going up and up in price at ridiculous rates. And, it reached stratospheric price heights in December. In super-fast time its price rose $2000 to more than$17,000 for each Bitcoin, then quickly collapsed losing $2000 from its price. But, it took years for it to reach this price. Bitcoin\u2019s value is based on its supply and demand.<\/span><\/p>\n

      With a growing number of businesses and people using Bitcoin, it pushes supply and demand up. Businesses, including physical businesses such as restaurants, legal firms, and real estate offices as well as online businesses such as Reddit, NameCheap, and Overstock are starting to use it. <\/span><\/p>\n

      Even though Bitcoin is a new concept, its popularity is growing fast across the world as people scramble to get in early.<\/span><\/p>\n
