The survey asked respondents their opinion on what they believe are the primary challenges faced by entrepreneurs, as well as what the main hurdles faced by already established SMEs might be. The software providers then compared the findings with the same Big Red Cloud survey conducted 24 months ago.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Speaking of the findings Marc O\u2019 Dwyer, CEO of Big Red Cloud,<\/span><\/p>\n \u201c<\/span>Sourcing the funds to propel your business forward is always a challenge, but it\u2019s notable that in the last 2 years, more business owners have begun to identify this as an even greater problem. One might have assumed that credit issues would not be as pronounced, with the economy improving as it has been. Conversely however, we see that difficulties around taxation have fallen down the pecking order when it comes to hurdles that both start-ups and SMEs have to surmount<\/span><\/i>\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Big Red Cloud Business Sentiment Survey reveals that while both new and established business face the same business challenges, the level of difficulty and concern those challenges pose differs greatly between the two groups.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201c<\/span>I think one of the key points to emerge from this survey is that \u201cred tape\u201d issues are a primary concern for SMEs in Ireland. Regulation & compliance shouldn\u2019t be as big a challenge as access to credit, but it is<\/span><\/i>,\u201d Mr O\u2019 Dwyer said,<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u201c<\/span>The fact that 58% of respondents believe that lack of Government support, taxation policy and the meeting of regulation and compliance standards are stymying development in the sector is very telling. While \u2018staffing\u2019 places last on the list \u2013 it should not be ignored that 13% of the businesses we surveyed say it is the number one challenge for established SMEs<\/span><\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Mr O\u2019 Dwyer went on to say,<\/span><\/p>\n \u201c<\/span>Figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) report that there are 248,344\u00a0Small and Medium Enterprises active in Ireland, employing some 968,881\u00a0people. The contribution these businesses make to our economy is enormous. So, we, and more specifically our Government, need to ensure that the supports and structures that will allow these businesses to not only survive, but thrive, are in place.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n <\/p>\n As a country we are doing well. \u00a0Analysis by monitors at\u00a0Vision-net found that\u00a022,354 new companies were registered in Ireland last year, a figure up by just over 6% on 2016 (21,018).\u00a0<\/span><\/i>An average 61 new companies were formed every day in Ireland last year, making it the best year ever for new business formation. However, it also reported an average of 3 insolvencies a day in 2017, with 1,018 company insolvencies recorded in total, a 3% increase on 2016.<\/i><\/p>\n <\/p>\n We need to nurture our emerging business sector. There are thousands of people out there who put their necks on the line every year in the hope of starting a commercial enterprise, that will not only provide them with income, but will also employ people in their region, and support other indigenous businesses.
