This was one of the findings of the nationwide survey carried out by Big Red Cloud, a leading supplier of online accounting software to the Irish SME market.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the survey, respondents were asked their views pertaining to 2 key issues<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business performance following the Recession<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ireland\u2019s attitude towards the self-employed<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of the findings, Marc O Dwyer, CEO of Big Red Cloud,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s interesting is that 8% of SMEs have reported a change in their economic fortune for the better over the last two years. Worryingly, 40% revealed that they are still struggling \u2013 though encouragingly perhaps, 20% of these businesses believe they will be in a better position by the end of 2018.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From a macro perspective, all figures for Ireland point to strong economic growth. While this is to be welcomed, this broad brush cannot be swept across the nation, as it is not reflective of the fortunes of all of Ireland\u2019s SMEs.<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our business landscape is made up of a myriad of different entities &#8211;\u00a0 businesses operating in import and export led industries, and within that we have big business, medium sized business, small business and start-ups. We wanted to drill down to get a better understanding of how Ireland\u2019s SMEs are feeling \u2013 and how this compares with the sentiment they expressed this time 2 years ago when we put the same question to them<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-16837 \" src=\"http:\/\/bigredcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/PressRelease.2.png\" alt=\"chart\" width=\"672\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bigredcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/PressRelease.2.png 1017w, https:\/\/bigredcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/PressRelease.2-300x82.png 300w, https:\/\/bigredcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/PressRelease.2-768x209.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 672px) 100vw, 672px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marc continued, <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked their feelings on Ireland\u2019s treatment of the self-employed the response was pretty clear with 97% reporting dissatisfaction to some extent \u2013 but to varying degrees. Given the importance of small businesses in Ireland to job creation and economic growth, the Government would do well to listen to those at the coal-face and to turn their attention to looking at how the can foster a more encouraging environment for SMEs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>How would you describe Ireland in terms of its attitude towards self-employed?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It encourages and fosters entrepreneurs (3%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It encourages the self-employed to an extent but there\u2019s a lot more that could be done (38%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It stymies entrepreneurial spirit (12%)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The enhanced social welfare benefits are welcome
