These days accountants are talking more and more about working ‘in the cloud’ and using cloud accounts software to run their book keeping and other accounts tasks. But what does it all mean?

Cloud computing refers to logging on to the internet via a hosted website to access and process your data, rather than using a local server (like your office computer). This means anywhere you can access the internet you can log in to your online account and get to work.

A cloud computing service is also known as Software as a Service (SaaS) platform, and accounts management via the cloud is proving to be very popular for many Irish businesses who are seeking a more flexible and streamlined solution for their accounts management.

What are the benefits of cloud computing software?

Affordability – no initial capital is required to purchase expensive accounting software. Instead you pay a small monthly service fee which goes to your SaaS provider.
Accessibility – log in anywhere, anytime via your Mac, PC or other electronic device. All you need is an internet connection.
Unlimited data storage – your data is not held on your internal network so you’re not constrained by the available storage on your hard drive.
Continuous service, no upgrade fees – You always operate on the latest version of the software that your SaaS provider supplies. Their software updates should happen automatically, without any cost or disruption to your service.
Security – SaaS providers, particularly those that specialise in account management, have extremely high security levels which must meet the requirements of ISO27001, which is the international standard for data security.
